Notary Publics can Sign for a Person with Physical Limitations

If a person has physical limitations that would cause them not to be able to sign their name or make a mark for their name, they can still get their documents notarized. If the following conditions are met, then the signer can authorize the Notary to sign for them.

  • The signer directs the Notary to sign their name
  • The signer has been properly identified and is physically in the presence of the Notary
  • The Notary must inscribe beneath the signer’s name that they were directed to sign:
    • “Signature affixed pursuant to Section 33 of the Michigan Notary Public Act”
